Committee members Clive Bristow, Mark Tyrtania and Vince Williams were set up at different swims around the lake and showed juniors, accompanied by parents, various techniques including lure fishing, float and ledgering techniques, trace making as well as pike handling. The hosting club put on a bbq and with Drennan International kindly providing goody bags a great day was had by all.

Vince Williamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01543345877831865677noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8631648146465061557.post-9905049669287121562021-03-29T12:15:00.002+01:002021-03-29T12:16:06.667+01:002021-22 Season Membership
<span style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: "Segoe UI Historic", "Segoe UI", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;">All existing PAC RA34 members should have been notified that memberships are now due for renewal.
<div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: "Segoe UI Historic", "Segoe UI", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;">For new members please contact Clive Bristow at clive.bristow@btinternet.com for further details.
<div dir="auto" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: "Segoe UI Historic", "Segoe UI", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;">
This is a good opportunity for existing members to update their contact details and for new individuals to join the group.

If you intend to join our regional group for season 2020-21 please send your full address, contact numbers and email address to clive.bristow@btinternet.com.
Your national PAC number would also be useful (you must have main PAC membership to join the regional group).

Clive will be asking for this years subscription at a later date so letting him know your preferred method of payment would also be useful.
Many thanks for this and please stay safe.Vince Williamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01543345877831865677noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8631648146465061557.post-90777478402539301282019-08-06T21:23:00.001+01:002019-08-06T21:23:41.769+01:002019-20 Events

Oxfordshire Pike Anglers Club & Linear Fisheries Annual Charity Pike Match 2018 Sponsored by Fox Rage

On Sunday 4th February 2018 a total of 27 anglers convened at St John’s pit, Linear Fisheries to take part in the annual charity pike. The gravel pit had not been fished for three weeks due to the Linear Fisheries winter resting policy. Everyone was hopeful it would fish well as everyone registered, brought raffle tickets and paid optional pools.

A briefing was conducted before the drawing of pegs before the anglers, including 2 juniors with their dads, set off to their swims to set up. Anglers could use up to 2 rods with deadbaits and lures being used. The whistle signalled the start of the match at 9am.
Stuart Green caught the first fish of the day on a dead trout, a jack weighing 4lb 7oz. This was followed by a fish weighing 4lb 13oz to Kevin Sparks on a float fished deadbait.

Paul Croft fishing in the swim next door then had a fish late morning on a lure which ended up being the biggest of the day at just 6lb 5oz.

Down in swim one father and son Mark and Young Connor Williams landed a pike just around lunch time weighing in at 6lb 4oz. This was followed by a dropped run soon after.

Unfortunately, it was becoming apparent that the fishing was extremely hard going and it continued to be slow all day with no other fish being landed, which was a massive surprise and a little disappointing but that’s fishing! At least Clive Bristow and Dan Williams who were walking the banks to weigh all fish caught had an easy day.

The whistle concluded the match at 3pm and once the anglers were packed up and returned to the meeting point the prizes of a Fox Rage Prism lure rod plus £60 pools, Prism reel plus £30 pools and a selection of Fox replicant lures plus £15 pools were presented to the 3 anglers who had caught the largest 3 pike, all being well earnt in the cold difficult conditions.

The day was completed with a raffle with 9 prizes being won. Once again everyone enjoyed the day and a worthwhile £406 was raised for the Ducklington Primary School new playground fund.

The Oxfordshire Pike Anglers Club would like to thank Fox Rage, Linear Fisheries, Dave Carter, Clive Bristow and Dan Williams for their assistance with this event.
This charity pike match is confirmed to take place again in 2019 on Sunday 2nd February, be sure to book your place.

The Oxfordshire Pike Anglers Club and Linear Fisheries Charity Pike Match has been held each year since 2015 and to date £1,590.50 has been raised for charities.
On 15 October five Oxford PAC members met with fly fishing
instructors Andy Grey and Mark Tickner at Linear Fisheries to learn how to fly
fish for pike. Some members had fly fished for other species before, others had
never held a fly rod. So Andy started the day with a really accessible
introduction to all the fly fishing tackle you will need to take on pike. After
that came the introduction to the somewhat strange art of fly casting; but
there was nothing to fear, as Andy and Mark had everyone rolling out nice casts
in no time!

Flies were then attached to lines and it was time to hit the
water. One of the best moments of the day soon followed as Martin - who had
never fly fished before - hooked into the biggest pike of the session! John,
Andy and Mark (twice!) all managed to bank a fish, just to confirm it really
can be done. After that it went a little quiet, but Andy and Mark roamed
between pegs providing invaluable tips, advice and helped fine tuned people's
fly casting. Later in the day some of us wandered around the banks of St John's
lake and in one of the last casts of the day Steve banked a nice jack. I think
it is fair to say it won't be his biggest fish of the season, but
pound-for-pound it'll be one that brings the biggest smile!

So a massive "thank you" to Andy and Mark who gave
up a day of their valuable time. As we packed up it became clear their efforts
had been successful, as discussions about "when can we do this
again?" and "well I know what I will be getting for Christmas"
were shared.

Our next and final event for the 2014-15 season is our trophy night meeting which takes place on Thursday 9th April 2015 at Oxford City Football Club starting at 7.30pm, everybody welcome. PAC members £3, non members £5 pay on the door.
As well as presenting our trophies for this season we welcome as our guest speaker Trevor Gunning who started out fishing on the Upper Thames as a 5yr old with his uncle.....won his first club match at the age of 12. By 17 he was fishing the open circuit and joined the Swindon Talisman Team in 1976. As a Team they won three Nationals and Trevor has fished internationally. Although at this time a match angler Trevor caught one of his first ever pike during the Bathampton Christmas Open in 1988! At that time it was fished by over 350 anglers. On a rock hard clear river he hooked what he thought was a barbel. Some 45 minutes later an 11lb pike graced his net. It has taken double red pinkie on a 22 hook and 1lb hooklength. Pike counted in the match and together with some roach and small chub gave him a winning weight of 16lbs and over £300 in prize money.

Also in 1988 Trevor caught his first ever marlin in Hawaii and his love of Big Game fishing grew from there and over the next 23 years he was fortunate to fish in some fabulous places with some great captains and fellow anglers. Trevor was also selected to represent the NFSA England Team in the Offshore World Championships on 5 occasions. Following on with 2 caps for the Angling Trust England Team. His biggest lure caught fish is a Black Marlin estimated at 450lb. This was caught on 30lb line and took nearly 3hrs to get on the leader before releasing.

After two previous years of bad weather and an unfishable
lake, the Motor Neurone Disease Association charity pike match sponsored by Fox was finally held on Sunday 1st February 2015
on the famous St. Johns Pool, Linear Fisheries. In total 26 Anglers took part
with some travelling far and wide to take part in this fun and relaxed day, for
a worthy cause. Cost for taking part was just a £10 donation for the charity so
it really was a value for money day. The format was a normal peg out of a bag
draw with fishing commencing at 9am till 3pm. Rather than the winner being the
highest accumulative weight, it would be based on the biggest fish to ensure
everyone had a chance right to the end, with one good fish being all that was
needed. Prizes would be allocated to the top three places, along with optional
pools for anglers. A refreshment van was also in attendance serving bacon
rolls, burgers, tea and coffee etc.

It didn’t take too long for the pike to make an appearance
and the first fish was on the bank within the first hour. Throughout the day it
was clear that there were short feeding spells with a couple of pike being
landed in quick succession each hour from various areas of the lake. Static dead
baits on the bottom seemed the most effective method on the day. Most venue
regulars predicted the Road Bank to be the best pegs on the day but it was
young Ryan Styles fishing on The Point swim who was bagging up. Ryan landed six
fish fishing the margins on the back of the wind with very small roach and
trout hook baits, coupled with a single treble hook and a Fox deadbait pencil
float ledger set-up. Ryan was fishing right next to his dad Jon.....who
blanked!

Those fishing on the East bank only saw one fish caught along with a few missed
runs and had to brave strong winds blowing into them all day but the banter was
good.

Overall it was a very successful day with everyone enjoying
themselves. A total of £400 was raised with all money going to the Motor
Neurone Disease Association – The chosen charity of Linear Fisheries. We
managed to raise over £100 from the raffle alone, where a total of 14 prizes
were up for grabs including kind donations from Cotswold Angling, Lechlade
Angling, States Tackle and Wychwood Brewery.
A big Thank You to Chris Blunt and the rest of the Linear Team for allowing us
to hold this worthwhile event. Thanks to all of the anglers who took part and
kindly donated other raffle prizes. Thank you to Fox International who kindly
donated tackle for the main prizes on the day (rod, reel and lures). Lastly,
thanks and well done to the anglers who supported the event and made it so
worthwhile.

Holyfield, a member of our region, who is also a bailiff at Horseshoe Lake,
Lechlade, Gloucestershire, approached me some time ago about holding such an
event there. Although the venue is owned and run by the carp society, they have
mutually beneficial links with both the PAC and The Tenchfishers and having
attend a couple of Mick Brown events, as well as our own regional fish-ins
there, I knew it was an ideal venue, with all facilities on site and a large

was chosen about 8 months before to allow plenty of time for all the arrangements
to be made and just as importantly to advertise, as we wanted to get as many
juniors as possible to attend. The date strategically being the last Saturday
in October before the clocks went back.

No RA (34) members have an angling
coaching qualification yet, so contact was made with Eric Edwards who heads up
the PAC development and coaching team. Following telephone conversations and
email exchanges I could see the format in which the event would be delivered. I
started advertising locally, firstly by sending posters to the county's tackle
shops, a couple of local schools and making contact with Angus Campbell who
lives nearby and who is a qualified L2 coach himself. He also runs a young
anglers club. Meanwhile, Eric was busy getting a number of coaches on board who

after and with floats cast out Mick Crisp’s group saw a double landed and this
was quickly followed by a 14lb pike to Tom Bartrip on the static ledgered baits
in Phil Wilkinson’s swim.

With pike on the bank the juniors were shown how to handle and unhook the pike
and all were excited with the captures. Each coach had their own style of
delivering, this along with the different tactics ensured that the juniors were
kept interested.

Everyone returned to the lodge for lunch, it was quite funny to see them
picking their lunch bags based on their team names ahead of their actual names.
Soon they were back out spending the afternoon completing all activities. We
concluded the day with a group photo, closing words and giving everyone a goody
bag which included a copy of Pikelines.

think it’s fair to say that everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day with the
coaches and adults getting as much satisfaction as the juniors, who learnt so
much and were all very well behaved. It cost one father £170 on the Monday, as
he had to go and kit his son out for lure fishing and I know of others who have
been out pike fishing regularly since. Point in case being Jess
Styles who has since upped her PB to 11lb 1oz and is out fishing with her dad
and brother most Saturdays.

A total of 3 pike were caught weighing 15lb (Dan Williams), 14lb (Steve Thompson) and Clive Bristow (13lb 2oz) which was pleasing from a venue with a low pike density. All fish fell within an hour window in late afternoon. Cetainly recent captures indicate that the local ressie is now well worth a go. Photos over page on the gallery. Our guest speaker will be Eric Edwards who will be travelling down from St Helen’s near Liverpool, an angler since the age of six, he has specialised in catching specimen coarse fish for the last thirty years. Notable captures include a record tench, caught in 1983 and a bream of 15 lb 2 oz. More recently, Eric has had great success with big pike, taking a number of thirty pound plus fish including no less than three over 37 lb in weight with the largest going 41 lb 8 oz, caught in 2001.Eric's pike fishing ambitions include the capture of a Welsh "thirty" to compliment others from England, Ireland and Scotland. This will be a bubbly entertaining talk, part of which will be about lure fishing for big pike (Eric had a another lure caught river 30 last week) and Eric will be telling us about his role as PAC Angling Development Officer, as a Level 2 Angling Coach as well as presenting our trophies.

For those that have recently ordered PAC RA 34 clothing this will be available for you to collect on the night.
Takes place at our usual venue of Oxford City Football Club, Boardroom (OX3 0NQ ) starting at 7.30pm. We welcome, as guest speaker, Gary Newman who is a photo-journalist with a weekly column in Angler’s Mail and who has travelled all over the world in pursuit of large freshwater species. He will be looking at some of his exploits across various continents after species such as alligator gar, goonch catfish, piraiba catfish and arapaima in the wild, and discussing the venues they are found in, and the tactics and tackle required to tempt and tame these monsters. So something a little different that promises to be a not be missed insight into this exciting fishing.
All welcome, £3 PAC members, £5 non PAC members, pay on the door. There will of course be a raffle and a second hand table if you wish to sell anything, please put a tag or sticker on with your name and how much you want for any items of tackle.

Charity Pike Match – Sunday 2nd February 2014 (CANCELLED)
Sadly, for the second consecutive year this has been postponed. The decision has been made today with the Linear Fisheries complex still closed due to the very high water levels. I am advised that it is likely to be around 3 weeks before St Johns lake re-opens. We will try again next year, hopefully third time lucky.
There were 10 anglers that fished, the amount of water that had gone into the lake and the hard frost made conditions hard and the fishing was slow. Only 4 fish were caught these being a 3lb pike and 1.08 perch to Tony Hallatt, a 7.02 pike to Norman Dearlove and a 13lb pike which fell to myself at 3pm on a float fished dead roach. Sadly the pike appeared to be blind in both eyes which probably explains why it took my bait!
